In 1962 various meetings were held to discuss the formation of an umbrella body to organise motor sports in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasa land.The inaugural Annual General Meeting was held in March 1963. The 1st President was Lieutenant Colonel Breeden Everard D.S.O. from Bulawayo. He was a railway engineer, General Manager of the Railways(and for a brief time the Acting President of Rhodesia during the UDI period).He was also a founding member of the Automobile Association.
ZMSF is affiliated to both the Federa tion Internationale de !'Automobile (FIA) and Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme.
